April POWerful Word – Positive Attitude – Week 1

Some people say “attitude is everything!” What do you think people mean by that? The attitude we choose to have at home, at school, in class and out in the world really makes a difference. People who have a positive attitude are healthier, less stressed, more energetic, have more friends and are happier than people who have a negative or bad attitude! A positive attitude is believing in good times even during bad times, being a “good finder” and using our power to make ourselves happy instead of sad or angry. When we have a positive attitude we look for the good in life. Do you have a positive attitude?

When we choose to have a positive attitude, we choose to think positive thoughts, feel positive feelings and say positive things. We are choosing to be “good finders” who look for the good
even when things aren’t going the way we want them to do. Someone who is a good finder and who has a positive attitude might have trouble mastering a skill in our class but instead of saying “I stink at this and I’ll never get it right” they might say “I’m better than I was yesterday” or “I’ll just keep trying.” What do you think a person like that might think to him or herself while working on a tough skill (i.e. I can do it!)? How might someone like that feel inside when working on a tough skill (i.e. good about sticking with it)? How might someone with a positive attitude act when learning a new skill (i.e. doesn’t give up)? Positive attitude makes a big difference!
