Kicking Set

KICKING SET

Striking Set is traditionally performed in a square pattern with Side A moving to 12:00, Side B to 3:00, Side C to 6:00, and Side D to 9:00. In class we typically practice a modern, linear pattern with transitions between sides done in a straight line (to 12:00, to 6:00, to 12:00, to 6:00).

Kicking Set Details

We're currently working on the modern kicking set in BBT and Adults classes. The only difference between modern and traditional is the footwork. We're going in a straight line instead of a box.

Foot Positions Are:
Front = Toes Up (to ceiling)
Side = Toes to Side (to chairs or wall)
Round = Toes Pointed (to flag)
Back = Toes Down (to floor) or to Side

Striking Surfaces Are:
Front = Bottom/Ball
Side = Heel & Blade/Knife-Edge
Round = Top of Foot or Shin
Back = Heel

Kyle's Kicking Set Mnemonics

One of our STORM Team members, Kyle P., shared a great technique he uses to remember the order of the kicks on each side of Kicking Set. It's called mneumonics.

A mnemonic (pronounced "ne-monik") is a memory aid, and most serve an educational purpose. Mnemonics are often verbal, something such as a very short poem or a special word used to help a person remember something, particularly lists. One common mnemonic for remembering lists consists of an easily remembered word, phrase, or rhyme whose first letters are associated with the list items.

In Kyle's Kicking Set mnemonics, the first letter of each word is the same as the first letter of the kick you need to execute. If you are having trouble remembering kicking set try using Kyle's mneumonics or make up your own!
