Tuesday Teens & Adults – Self Control W1

The Powerful Word of the Month this month is “Self Control.” Self Control is the ability to slow down and think through choices before acting upon them. Essentially, it’s stopping yourself from doing the first thing that pops into your head. These days, we’re so focused on what everyone else is doing. Between reality TV, Twitter, and Facebook, we know more about other people than we ever have in the past. But self control is all about how we conduct ourselves. It acknowledges that we can’t control anyone else’s behavior but our own. Self control is what puts us in charge or our own lives. In the words of Italian author and satirist, Pietro Aretino, “I am, indeed, a king, because I know how to rule myself.” This month, we must ask ourselves, how well are we handling our own actions?

Week 1: This week, we’re talking about working through problems and solutions without losing our heads. As teens and adults, there is a balance that we must strike. On the one hand, we must be goal-oriented, self motivated, gutsy, and eager. On the other hand, we must be level-headed and thoughtful in the way we approach our goals. Someone once said; “Self-determination is fine but needs to be tempered with self-control.” Do you agree? How can we temper our self determination with self control without stifling or stopping progress? This week, your Powerful Thought Assignment is to rate yourself from 1 to 10 on your ability to be self controlled. What would make your score one point higher? What would a ten look like? What adjustments would you like to make?
